Green mortgages

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 2:51 pm

Working for a real estate association, I get a lot of interesting news releases coming across my desk. Some talk about new condo designs, others about the pitfalls of foundation problems, and lately I’ve been seeing more and more articles on ‘green’ initiatives.

Yesterday I read an article that made me wish I didn’t have 4 years until my mortgage came up for renewal. The Citizen’s Bank of Canada, in partnership with the Conservation Council of Ontario and Green$aver, have developed a ‘green mortgage’. Basically, they give you a mortgage and a box of green goodies. Good article courtesy of CarbonFree.

looking stuff up

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 2:04 pm

it still surprises me, in this age of information, that people still don’t try looking things up before they ask another person for the easily accessible information that they are looking for. Like phone numbers, and bank machine locations, album titles, store hours… All 2 minutes away.

On a number of occasions I’ve had people not call to tell me their change of plans, because “i don’t have your phone number.” I have a rare last name, there’s only one of me in Hamilton. It’s not that hard… For the future, it’s listed under my last name, not mike’s.

Mini-rant over.

the sound of settling

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 8:02 am

things are settling around here. the house has been painted and moved into, warmed, and tiled, light fixtures changed, plumbing fixed, furnace replaced, a/c installed, kitchen faucet replaced, oh and we even have a little garden planted. all that’s really needed is some fantastic wall ’stuff’. art, photos, hanging bodies, something.. so that’s the next project.

i’ve also aquired employment… as a pizza pizza phone answerer. so if you live in the hamilton area and want to order a pizza from p.p. you may get me on the phone, nifty eh? it’s not glamourous, but it could be worse, i was almost ready to apply to tim hortons.. those commercials are catchy.

the bonus of a job like this, as I was commenting to a friend the other day, is that it’s one of those leave at work kind of jobs, when once you’re at home you don’t need to worry about deadlines, and planning etc. so for now at least I can actually have guilt free time at home. probably spent looking for non leave at work jobs…

in other news we saw a kid twist his body into strange shapes on friday on the corner of james and king. this was hours after we walked past the bullet holes from wednesday night. i love our neighbourhood.

so…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 12:00 pm

i’m learning to drive. i turned 25 a few weeks ago and figured it was about time. fred is helping me through the curves in the road in his wife’s red civic. i have until the end of the summer, hopefully i will have a geetwo by then.

in house related news, we don’t have our house yet. the bounderies are all screwed up on paper and we’ve told the sellers to fix it before we give them any cash. so now we wait. in the meantime i’m going to pack all my crap any way since one way or another i’m outta here at the end of august. we had the option of walking away, but Mike left this morning for a month and so we wouldn’t be able to look until he got back anyway, so we wait.

Also, Mike left this morning for a month and so i’m going to be bored more often and home more often, so give me a call, or come visit if you feel so inclined (or live close enough to do so). Tomorrow marks the beginning of megan’s arts and crafts month. I told the boy i was going to send him a paper machee animal every week he was gone, realistically I don’t think that’s going to happen, but I do hope to maybe make one (to keep the joke alive) and finish my sun dress, work on my quilt, and maybe make myself a dress for all the weddings i’ve been invited to this summer.

… and keep looking for a job.

I just hung up on a telemarketer. Normally I let them go through their spiel and then decline, but this woman was chewing something and talking slowly, and it was gross. I mean sure it’s a crappy job, but you could at least take your gum out of your mouth, or finish eating your lunch before you call me. Thanks.

On Buying a House.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 7:47 am

David requested an update.

I’m buying a house, and still don’t have a job. It’s a stressful situation.

The house Mike and I are attempting to buy can be seen here. It is an old house, but we had an inspection done and it seems pretty solid. We got a lawyer a couple of days ago to do all the legally stuff, and in her digging she found that the house has an interesting history, the property lines are screwy, it was once part of an estate, and may not be cleared up yet.. lots of fun stuff. If everything works out, we take possession on June 15th. Wow.. that’s like two weeks today…

Other than that, my life is pretty boring, taking a night class in statistics, refinishing Mike’s parent’s kitchen cupboards, trying to decide what to pack.

Your turn David.

bus karma and the city

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 10:51 am

I love the city, i love this city, i love most cities.

I grew up in a painfully small town, 1600 people (more now, but 1600 when I lived there), and when I was 19 I moved to Hamilton. I haven’t really lived anywhere else since. A couple stints on Vancouver Island, which is beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but painfully little to do without a car (unless you’re in Vic). Last week I was out with a bunch of women from class and we were talking about where we grew up etc, and I came from the smallest town by far, but everyone was surprised. Thought I was city girl. So I guess in the past 5.5 years I’ve managed to shed most of the small town from me, not that there was that much there to begin with.. I come from a pretty urban family, so maybe it wasn’t that difficult afterall, but I digress.. The point of this post was two-fold: to declare my love for this city and state my intentions to become a permanant resident, at least for the next 4 years; and to talk about the bad bus karma I had in the beginning of the week.

I hate being late, and on at least two seperate occations this week the buses let me down either by being so late that I missed my connector, or by driving by me 2 or 3 times before I had to catch a bus that wehn close to where I was going and walk a few blocks. Today I get to attempt the bus system again, so here’s hoping the bad karma is gone.

8 more days of school…

i think i know too much/accepted too much to fully and efectively participate in class discussions. I often find myself agreeing with people, or shaking my head, but most of the things people say are things I know, but accept as common knowledge that I would never think about bringing them up in class.. i’m not sure if this is making sense.. maybe i’m just not engaged enough. is there a point where knowledge becomes so common place that it leads to apathy?

also i went bra-less yesterday for no particular reason, other than i forgot to pack one to bring to mike’s, but it was pretty comfy. i can see why the braburners wanted to liberate their tits. it’s just comfy sometimes.

the ghetto turkey

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 9:53 am

last night m.b. and i had sara and jordan over for turkey. we had it out all thawed and stuffed it, closed it and all that jazz, and then i got out my roasting pan… the little turkey was just a little too big. so in stead we put it on a frying pan and covered it with a stainless steel bowl, and put a cookie sheet underneath. it actually worked out quite well. we then proceeded to drink too much wine and couldn’t drive to the show where we were meeting matt. so we’re going to make up for it with some kickass breakfast.
