stranger danger, danger stranger
Last week I found a new favourite album in Architecture in Helsinki’s ‘In Case We Die’. It’s the perfect blend of the books, the fiery furnaces and the go! team, and the perfect summer album (appropriate considering that they’re Australian). Needless to say they’ve been the background for the past week which jam packed with pretty amazing music.
uncontrollable dancing
As I mentioned last episode, er, entry (laurier 24 has me brainwashed) I mentioned seeing redshift play at the local dive down the street, anyway, following the show Andrew asked if I was planning on attending the ctrl.ctrl show the next night at the underground (I wasn’t) but remembering that last time we missed them Borrelli was sad and so the next night I asked if he was interested (this after a long day of Ford training and cousin’s birthday party) and he was! Long story shortened: we went and saw ctrl.ctrl with Andrew and Carolyn and danced like crazies (a theme that will follow through for the weekend).
and he drubbed us all
Saturday was quieter. We swam, relaxed, bought beer, drank beer and played games. A day of relaxing to prepare for festivalization. The day culminated in a heated game of scrabble with the letters and dictionary flying all over the place. In the end Mike was victorious, but just. The ‘Q’ curse continued (for those of you unfamiliar with the ‘Q’ curse, I am convinced that the Borrelli household’s Scrabble game is possessed. The first time it happened to me I figured it was just bad luck, the second time it happened to me I was filled anxiety, and then when Joe drew the Q on his last trip into the bag of letters I was convinced that the was in fact cursed.
I got a phone call from the lord, saying “hey boy, get a sweater, right now”
We woke early on Sunday and played a few levels of Mario Sunshine, which we are slowly working our way through, and had some coffee and packed up our (Mike’s) bag for our modest mouse adventure. This is a day I had been looking forward to since Mike informed me that it was my birthday present from him, and now it was finally here. We caught the 11:00am train to Union to meet a gaggle of people, Christine, Liam and Alex, Dave Alexander, Greg Smith and Larissa, Sean Geobey and some other people.
After a moment of miscommunication we actually met up with said group and had some lunch. I then said goodbye to Christine and we headed for the ferry to Centre Island. Jokes about drowning and dying ensued, and then more lines on the other side, but we got in and things were good, there was shade and lots of good people watching, oh and some bands too.. Keren Ann put on a good show, although short, Triumph of Lethargy we ok, Most Serene Republic was pretty good, Do Make Say Think were absolutely incredible, and Metric were what I expected. Broken Social Scene took the stage with Lover’s Spit and witty banter, and played a long, solid set with the help of the lovely Leslie Feist. It was dark by the time modest mouse took the stage and the lighters in the crowd looked stunning. They played a solid set with two encores. Mostly new stuff, but a few classic gems.
We got off the island with lots of time to catch the 12:45 train back to Oakville (where we had parked due to a timing mishap earlier in the day) and got back to Hamilton around 2ish.
Sleeping in was nice.
