the application of academia

Filed under: Uncategorized — Megan @ 7:29 pm

over the past 4 weeks i have come to realize how much i believe that the work that academics do should have some sort of practical application. this isn’t as daunting a task as it sounds, we just need more people willing to do knowledge translation work, and make the work universities produce accessible for those outside the system. i can under stand the appeal of writing for other academics, but in the end it’s really just talking to hear your self speak. ideally all research will be useful in someway, whether it exposes ideas that make us think about the world in a different way; changes the way we educate out children; produces hybrid medical solutions by combining different cultural practices; or explains why some music sounds better to some people. the main point being that it is accessible for those who haven’t gone though the university system, and who may use these ideas to create new programs, or systems or ideas that might have otherwise gone untouched. we need more community building, more bridges, more cooperation. ideally all academic work will solve some problem, some real problem.

on another note, i applied for the ontario internship program today in the field of policy development, and would be really excited if i manage to get an interview.

school is going superwell, work too, and life is pretty incredible aside from the occasional headache (but i was blood tested today to see if there’s any real issue there). tonight is 24 night and so m.b. and i are going to get some ‘za and curl up on the couch to watch j.b. kill some folk (all guilty of course).

i’m going home now. sorry for the lag. i’ll try and update more often. mwah.
